A couple weeks ago, San Jose Sharks defensemen Brad Lukowich and Dan Boyle were driving to a heavy metal concert when the discussion started. It's probably safe to say that they were the only two music fans en route to the In Flames and All That Remains show discussing what it takes to win in the NHL playoffs.
They were trying to decide what the missing factor was for talented teams that underachieve in the postseason.
"Some teams, they dominate so much and they get to that stage and don't buy in anymore," Lukowich told SportingNews.com. "All of a sudden, it's 'I'm on the grand stage,' they get more fancy and get away from the game plan."
Lukowich never mentioned his current team, the Sharks, by name but he didn't have to. The Sharks are playing at another level, leading the NHL with a 23-3-2 record entering Their success has been staggering. Yet, there are skeptics. The Sharks, you see, are no strangers to regular season success. In six of the past seven seasons, the Sharks have had at least 90 points. In the past four regular seasons, the team averaged 104.5 points.
It's playoff success that eludes the Sharks, who have been eliminated in the second round for three consecutive seasons.

That's where Lukowich and Boyle come in. Amidst the flurry of free-agent signings and splashy moves last summer, GM Doug Wilson's trade that sent Matt Carle, Ty Wishart and picks to the Tampa Bay Lightning in return for Boyle and Lukowich was frequently overlooked.

"I think when we do get to the playoffs, maybe then we can share a little bit of our experiences and what we need to do."

Boyle's impact is unmistakable. In 27 games, he has 10 goals and 14 assists and helps spark the rush without sacrificing too much defense. San Jose leads the league in averaging 3.64 goals per game while showing remarkable balance in allowing 2.29 goals per game.
But at the same time, you can't discount the impact of Lukowich, whose contributions are harder to measure.
"It's not just his playoff experience," said Jay Feaster, who was Boyle and Lukowich's general manager in Tampa Bay. "Luke understands the dynamics of the locker room. He helps keep things loose and has a pretty good read on the teammates and what they're thinking."
From a Tampa Bay perspective, the decision to trade Boyle and Lukowich was little more than a salary dump. It allowed the new management team, now led by GM Brian Lawton, to sign free agents including Ryan Malone, Radim Vrbata and Gary Roberts. Vrbata was sent to the Czech league earlier this week.
It's not exactly working out from that end. Tampa Bay entered Saturday's games tied for the league's worst record. But while the winning has made the transition to San Jose an easy one for Boyle and Lukowich, they aren't reveling in the struggles of their former team.
"It's unfortunate for all the people that made it what it was -- Jay Feaster, John Tortorella, all the work they did. Torts used to sleep at the rink, he wanted to win so bad," Lukowich said. "We were all in it together, and knew what it took to get to the top."
Now Lukowich climbing again in San Jose. And make no mistake, he knows the way.
